The Singapore Travel: Places to eat in Singapore. Part 1

When you arrive at Singapore for the first time you have the impression that the Singaporeans are constantly eating. And it is absolutely true. There are a lot of places to eat or have a snack in Singapore. You will never be hungry during your Singapore travel. It is absolutely impossible to be hungry in Singapore.

I’d like to tell you about my favorite and the most commonly visited places where one can get a snack.

I think that OldChangKee is the best snack place. At least it’s my favourite, so I’ll try to describe it in details.

The history of OldChangKee goes back to 1956. It started with just a small stall in a coffee shop. At that time they sold curried potatoes, chicken and a slice of egg fried with several herbs and spices.

Each curry puff was carefully handmade and properly sealed to lock in the unmistakable aroma. And many Singaporeans liked them very much.

In 1986 Han Keen Juan became the owner of OldChangKee. His main goal was to transform OldChangKee into a successful business. And he managed to change not only his life but the food scene in Singapore as well.

Years went on and OldChangKee became Singapore's leading brand of curry puffs and other hot savories.

In 1992 Han Keen Juan was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year and was hailed by Newsweek and the now defunct Asia Magazine as the man to watch.

In 2004 and 2005 OldChangKee was awarded the Singapore Promising Brand Award and also the Singapore Heritage Brand Award.

OldChangKee has extended its product range to include other items such as spring rolls with chicken and vegetables, pineapple, corn and yam pies, etc. Sotong heads and balls, fish balls, crab claws, sesame balls are on sticks and are served with hot sauce.

All the products are deep fried and the customers not only view the process but can eat them warm. The price is from SGD 1.

Now one can find the OldChangKee products in yellow kiosks along the Orchard road, in supermarket outlets and in modern shopping malls.

BreadTalk is another snack place I like very much. It was founded in April 2000.

Now it operates a chain of retail outlets selling more than 50 varieties of specially created pastries, cakes and bread. The price is from SGD1 to SGD2.80.

The products include the Earthquake Cheese Loaf, Ah Bian (similar to pita bread), and Mount Fuji Swirl (filled with kaya and cream). The hot favourite, which normally accounts for 20 per cent of sales turnover, is the SGD1.40 Flosss (cream bun topped with pork floss).

I’ll tell you about other snack places in my next post.
